Seniors who are blind and suffer from hearing loss may qualify for a federal program funded by tax revenues. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is geared towards those who have little or no income and are blind or disabled. It provides monetary benefits to pay for basic necessities. Seniors can sign up for SSI benefits by calling 1-800-772-1213.

To qualify for the SSI program, individuals need to be aged 65 or older, or blind, or disabled, with limited income and resources, and be a U.S. citizen or national, and reside in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.

Applying for SSI Benefits

It is important to note that not all applicants can apply online. For instance, online applications aren’t available for those aged 65 or older. According to the website, you can apply to the SSI program through these methods:

  • Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (or TTY 1-800-325-0778 if you are deaf or hard of hearing) and making an appointment to apply for SSI.
  • Having someone else call and make the appointment for you or assist you with your application for SSI.
  • Call your local Social Security office to schedule a telephone appointment to file for SSI benefits.

After you have applied, you might be contacted to provide further information or documents. You can also verify the status of your SSI application online using your personal my Social Security account. You can also call them at  1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday to check the status of the application.
