Adaptive clothing is perhaps one of the greatest inventions for individuals who are disabled. Those who have limited mobility have specific needs when it comes to the clothing they wear. Unfortunately, many mainstream brands have yet to make truly inclusive strides towards creating clothing that these individuals will want to wear.

Over the years, however, new brands have sprouted that specifically cater to disabled individuals. Fashion designer Izzy Camilleri, who had been in the industry for many years, founded IZ Adaptive in 2009.

After taking in a client living with quadriplegia named Barbara Turnbull, Camilleri’s eyes were opened to the trials that people with disabilities face when it comes to something as mundane as dressing up. And so, she left the world of high fashion to start her line of adaptive clothing, understanding that there are so many more people like Barbara out there who could benefit from it.

Fast forward a few years, and IZ Adaptive has added a new Game Changer collection to their growing range of adaptive and accessible clothing. We have tried and tested their pieces to give you a comprehensive review below.

Addressing a Grave Concern

Wheelchair users often have to wear clothing that is loose fitting or a couple sizes larger. This makes it easier for them to dress themselves, or for those who dress them. However, ill-fitting clothing can have serious repercussions. One of the biggest challenges that wheelchair users face is pressure sores.

Pressure sores occur when skin tissue becomes damaged after being in a certain position for extended periods of time. Wheelchair users are especially susceptible to these because of friction from loose garments, moisture, and remaining stationary. Pressure sores take very long to heal, and they can also be life threatening if not dealt with correctly.

Overview of the Game Changer Collection

IZ Adaptive’s Game Changer Collection is a product of years and years of research and development. At face value, we already noticed how all the pants in this collection are stylish and do not appear to have any special considerations. They look like the pants you see at your favorite stores, with a range of styles for different outfits and purposes.

However, each piece in this collection has been carefully designed to ensure maximum comfort and wearability for its users. Using their IZ Seated Cut design made for wheelchair users, each pair of pants does not have seams on its backside. This seamless design at the back makes sure that users can sit for long stretches, while also avoiding pressure sores.

Styles and Specifics

The styles in this collection feature classic silhouettes now made with seamless and pocket-free backside customization. We really appreciated how easy it was to put the pants on, especially as they follow the form of the seated body. Senior users may have a much simpler time dressing themselves in the absence of a caregiver.

The men’s collection includes jeans, sweats, and chinos. We loved how the jeans and chinos both have extended zippers with removable pull tabs for greater ease of dress. These two pairs also give users a choice in terms of the type of closure: button or hook & bar.

The women’s collection also includes jeans and sweats, but offers yoga pants, leggings, and jeggings as well, with chinos on the way. Sizes for both men and women are very much inclusive, with a range of size 28–54 for men and 2–24 for women. The pants come in a number of different colors so that you can mix and match depending on your outfit.

Prices for the Game Changer collection start at $90 for women’s leggings and jeggings. Yoga pants and sweats are priced at $105; chinos are $155; and jeans are $165. While on the pricier side, we can say that these are a wise investment, particularly because of the amount of work, care, and thought put into designing them.

Pants from the Game Changer collection are also wardrobe staples that wheelchair users will likely keep returning to day in and day out. Blending both form and function, the collection truly is revolutionary. IZ Adaptive is definitely setting the bar when it comes to adaptive and accessible clothing. We hope that other brands follow suit.

Giving Back

Another thing we love about IZ Adaptive’s Game Changer collection is that they go above and beyond their identity as a brand. Three-percent of every pair sold in the US will be donated to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. This organization is committed to improving the quality of life of those who suffer from paralysis, and also to finding a cure for spinal cord injury.

On the other hand, for every pair sold internationally or in Canada, 3% will be given to the Rick Hansen Foundation, which is dedicated to creating solutions for the barriers that people living with disabilities face.

Final Verdict

From senior citizens to individuals living with disabilities, there are numerous people who can benefit from IZ Adaptive’s Game Changer collection. We truly felt all the thought and love that went into creating this collection, and can say with conviction that the collection will help restore a sense of dignity and sense of self among its users.

Dressing up the way you please can have such a large impact on one’s mental wellbeing – even more so when you know that the clothes have been designed with your needs in mind. All in all, the Game Changer collection does just that. It lives up to its name. We look forward to seeing the collection expand, and become a staple for individuals with limited mobility.
