Though the process of aging can be difficult to accept for many individuals, becoming a senior citizen has its perks as well. Many states provide substantial discounts for seniors, giving you the ability to travel from place to place at a much cheaper rate.

While the SEPTA Key Senior Fare Card allows seniors aged 65 to ride for free on most Pennsylvania transit routes, New Jersey Transit’s Reduced Fare Program provides discounts of 50% or more on a regular one-way fare for seniors aged 62 and over

SEPTA Key Senior Fare Card

To make the most of the SEPTA senior fare card, you’ll need to have a valid ID and apply for the card online or call 215-580-7145 to make an appointment at the SEPTA headquarters.

When you ride, make sure to bring your ID along with your card. You’ll be able to ride for free on all routes, including buses, trolleys, the Broad Street/Broad Ridge Spur Line, Market Frankford Line/Norristown High Speed Line and on Regional Rail for travel to/from stations located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

However, you’ll still need to pay 50% of the Weekday Fare when you travel to or from New Jersey and the State of Delaware.

NJ TRANSIT’S Reduced Fare Program

The state of New Jersey also offers reduced fares for senior citizens or those with a disability. Personal assistants to disabled individuals can also ride for free when they provide an ID. The good news is that you don’t need to be a New Jersey resident to get the discount, as long as you’re 62 and above.

However, note that the discount is only valid for those 65 years of age if you’re traveling to or from Metro-North Railroad stations.

Many other states also offer senior discounts for airlines and for transit systems, so make sure to check whether you can avail of these savings in your hometown or during travel.
