While Social Security continues to help older adults across the United States stay afloat, not everyone can survive on these benefits alone. The cost of living varies per state, which means that Social Security may not be sufficient. For seniors who need supplemental financial assistance, you can consider the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program. 

SS and SSI are often conflated, but there are key differences between the two. Although you apply for both through the Social Security Administration, SSI is funded by general tax revenues. As a needs-based program, it is ideal for seniors who cannot live on just SS benefits. 

The benefits you receive will be based on needs, factoring in your income, where you live, and even who you live with. You do not need work credits to qualify for this. Depending on your situation, you can receive SS benefits together with SSI benefits for additional support
