As adults age, senior home care options can help them stay comfortable and free. However, the cost of healthcare is growing increasingly expensive for those with a limited income. To remedy this, some health programs such as Medicare and Medicaid can shoulder some of the costs for seniors aged 65 or older.

Eligibility requirements vary depending on the program, but permanent residency and citizenship are two of the key requirements for seniors. Medicare benefits for seniors include medically necessary nursing home care, and part-time home care.

Medicare Coverage

In general, Medicare coverage can include the partial or complete cost of:

  • Prescription drugs
  • Part-time in-home health care
  • Doctor care and services
  • Skilled nursing facility costs
  • Hospice care
  • Immunizations
  • Tests and preventative screening

However, it doesn’t usually cover meal deliveries, eye exams, and hearing exams, along with dental care for seniors.

Medicare Benefits for Nursing Homes

Medicare Part A can cover the cost of skilled nursing care in some facilities if it is directly associated with the treatment or diagnosis of a medical condition. However, non-medical or nursing home care is not covered by Medicare.

Medicare Benefits for In-Home Care

Medically necessary services such as skilled nursing care, home health aide services, physical and occupational therapy can be covered by Part A and/or Part B of Medicare but don’t cover the cost of meal deliveries. Help with chores and daily services may be covered depending on the situation.
