Goodwill is a nonprofit organization that aims to "help people in need achieve self-sufficiency, dignity, and hope through the power of work." It was founded in 1902 and had its headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.

Shopping for second-hand items at Goodwill means bargains and senior discounts. As the most popular thrift store in the U.S., Goodwill offers seniors opportunities to save cash on purchases through the Goodwill senior discount plus other promotion schemes.

Wondering how seniors can save at Goodwill? Check out the Goodwill senior discount policy and other store savings tips.

Goodwill has 163 autonomous regions with over 3,200 stores in the United States and Canada. Each region has its own management team, which handles the day-to-day operations, including giving out promotions and discounts.

As a result, Goodwill stores in different regions may have different senior discount policies. Some Goodwill offers a 20% senior discount on the first Tuesday of every month. Others offer 25% off every 2nd Monday of the month

Some regions, like Southern Arizona, offers a 20% senior discount every Tuesday and Wednesday. Some stores offer a 10% discount every day of the week with additional discounts on certain weekdays.

That said, the age requirement also varies. Some stores offer the senior discount to those 55+ while others offer it for seniors aged 60 and above. The best way to find out the discount your local Goodwill store offers is to visit them and inquire about it.

Other Ways To Save At Goodwill

Aside from the Goodwill senior discount, you can also encounter additional savings at the store that can stack up to 50% in total savings. Common sales promotions are:

  • Colored Tag Discount Days, where Goodwill tags clothes and items with a certain color corresponding to a percentage discount such as 10%, 25%, or 50% off
  • Half-off Saturdays, which are special Saturdays where you get selected items at 50% off
  • Senior Discount Days, which are special days where seniors get 25% off in selected locations

These promotions vary from one store to the other. One way to stay in the loop is by signing up for the Goodwill Email Newsletter, where you can select what items you're interested in and what locations you often visit. Then, they'd send you personalized information about discounts.

Shopping Tips To Save Big At Goodwill

Goodwill Senior Discount Shopping Tips

Goodwill already offers massive bargains by being a thrift store, and discounts like the senior discount and colored tag discount further increase the bargains. But tips and tricks still exist to extend your dollars and save big when buying at Goodwill.

As a senior, saving every penny is important to devote more funds to your retirement bucket list. So, check out these shopping hacks to help you get the most out of your Goodwill shopping spree.

1. Sign Up For Goodwill’s Newsletter

As mentioned, every Goodwill store is individually managed, and no two stores are alike. Bargains and promotions are entirely different per store. Each also has its own online presence, and signing up for their newsletter entitles you to get coupons you can use at their location.

2. Follow Your Local Goodwill's Facebook Page

Check if your local Goodwill store has a Facebook page and follow it. There's a good chance they announce their promotions and give out special coupons on the page. Goodwill may also promote special sale events and new items to check out.

3. Shop During Special Color Tag Days

Every Goodwill store has a special color tag sale day where they give out huge discounts, as much as 30-50% off. Sometimes, they even sell items at just $1 each! Again, you can learn about these dates on their Facebook page or email newsletter.

4. Shop Early In The Morning

You'd be surprised how many great items you can find at Goodwill in the mornings when the store opens. Store staff price items at night, and by the time the door opens, you should be ready to scoop out the great ones. These fly out the door fast since they can be a steal, and some people sell them for high amounts.

5. Shop Clothes By The Pound At Goodwill Clearance Centers

Goodwill doesn't want any item to end up at landfills, so they sell stuff at clearance centers by weight. Instead of paying for items individually, you can get them by the pound. This is great for lightweight items like clothes. Imagine how many clothes you can buy for the price of one pound.

Goodwill is just one of the many stores where seniors can enjoy huge discounts. Check out this Senior Strong article about Garden Factory’s senior discounts, which can save you huge bucks when you buy high-quality garden products.
